A note from jenn
“Read to your child every night”—excellent advice that can make a parent cringe if they have done this lovingly and diligently, but their child is still struggling with reading. Enjoying a book together at bedtime is fantastic for bonding, and it strengthens a child’s imagination, vocabulary, and comprehension. But for kids experiencing reading difficulties, being read to each night will not necessarily help them become independent readers. If sounding out words is challenging, they need targeted practice. Never devalue the joy and importance of reading to (and with) your child, but understand when something else is needed.
For some students, having a book put in front of them causes anxiety, frustration, and embarrassment. I love books, but every day, I see that for some children, books may not be the right tool to help them begin to read. Every child learns differently. Some shut down at the words “Let’s read a book,” whereas “Let’s play a game!” generates a positive feeling. Motivation increases, confidence builds, and pressure to “read” is gone. Their love for books grows when they aren’t reminded of their frustrations.
I know that as a parent, you want to help your child. I know that nothing is more important to parents than time spent with their kids. When that time is filled with meltdowns, frustration, and resistance from your child, the strategies need to change. We can instill in our kids a love of reading by changing the way they think about it. Bring back game time. Bring back their confidence. Bring back their joy for learning, and watch them fall in love with reading.
